The Kelly bag was originally designed in 1892 by the legendary craftsman Thierry Hermès. In 1930, it was re-sized to suit the clientele’s need for traveling, known as sac à dépêches. While today, one Hermès scarf is sold every 20 seconds, back then the fashion house had just launched its first accessories in an ultimately successful attempt to widen its profile – having established itself during the previous 100 years as a harness workshop dedicated to serving noblemen.
For the following two decades, the bag retained its original name until Grace Kelly, the Princess of Monaco was caught in LIFE magazine holding a sac à dépêches in front of her to hide her pregnancy from a crowd of paparazzi.
Since then the trapezoidal Hermès handbag became known to the world as a Kelly bag and still remains a desirable status symbol today. The axiom ‘simplicity – the root of all genius’ certainly applies to Kelly bags. In the book ‘Zerlegt’ published earlier this year, Swiss journalist, designer and tailor Jeroen van Rooijen shows how he cut up various classic gameness and accessories, including a pink Kelly.
The laconic outcome is striking just a few high-quality leather pieces of a simple and classical cut, six metal details and a waxed linen thread and jowls and belly skin are used. The final touch involves the ironing to get a perfectly wrinkle-free surface.
- Unlike the Birkin bag, only one year waiting list is needed to get one’s hands on a genuine Kelly bag. After six months, you’ll be able to choose the type of leather and the color and the bag.
- Type of leather varies from silky smooth or textured calfskin to exotic lizard and crocodile skin.
- Depending on the type of leather and size, the bag costs between 4,000 and 25,000 Euros.
- From beginning to end a Kelly bag is made by one and the same craftsman in 18 to 25 hours.
- The bag is then given a number and should there be any faults, it is then returned to the same craftsman.
The selection of materials, colours and finishes is wide enough to fulfill any fashionista’s desires. Just take a look at the video below:
Kelly is adorned by a plethora of famous names including Catherine Zeta-Jones, Jennifer Love-Hewitt, the Olsen sisters and even Britney Spears, but the most dedicated of all, of course, is Victoria Beckham with a very impressive collection. Here are just a few of them:
With the high demand for the firm’s coveted handbags (“We can only make so many bags,” – says Chief Executive Patrick Thomas) and orders being delayed for several years as the company scours the globe for the right colour of crocodile, you may want to join the waiting list today, so by the time you’re ready for your very own Kelly, it is ready for you too.

Sexy images have been released of the singing sensation Rihanna modeling as the new face and body of Emporio Armani Underwear and Jeans campaign. The campaign, shot in New York by Steven Klein, sees Rihanna posing seductively in a number of sultry lingerie pieces in the back of a vintage car.
Speaking of the campaign, the singer said: ”I realized that I actually like my body, I just feel sexy. For the first time, I don’t want to get rid of the curves. My body is comfortable, and it’s not unhealthy, so I’m going to rock with it.”
While no doubt Rihanna looks delicious, we still like previous Emporio Armani Underwear campaigns starring Megan Fox and Victoria Beckham with her amazing husband.

At the Haute Today HQ we were slightly stunned when Ferarri launched the FerrariFour leaving some of its brand design values much to the topic of debate in every auto museum. Did Ferrari sell out to capture the family market? We are left asking the similar questions with the new 2012 Range Rover Evoque which was revealed at the recent 2011 New York International Auto Show. Are Range Rover selling out to the masses using lower entry price points and clever celebrity ambassadorship?
Whilst the five door stays a little more aligned to the Range Rovers aesthetically unique shape, the three door coupe SUV looks amartian to the pre-existing collection and somewhat resembles a Honda CRV.
This new release is a far cry from the elegance of the Range Rover Autobiography, where in February I humbly stated “Range Rover have upped the anti in the luxury stakes” .
Land Rover has confirmed the rumour that the entry level (priced from $53,395) Range Rover will be available in Australia in November .

Following the footsteps of her hubby, Victoria stripped to the bare minimum for Emporio Armani underwear Spring/Summer 2009 ad campaign.
For a guaranteed success, Armani hired the dynamic photographer duo – Mert Alas and Marcus Piggott (who shot David too) to create Elizabeth Taylor in the 50s feel with a touch of film noir high glam.
Giorgio said in a statement he chose the 34-year-old British mother of three as the new face and body of his lingerie line because she is a “stylish and intriguing woman.”
Signature billboards will take place in every fashion capital of the world – NYC, London, Milan, Rome, Paris and Tokyo, as well as the pages of high-end fashion glossies.
Let see if this campaign will send fans into overdrive like David’s did.
I have always admired Victoria’s ambition. She’s got a hot husband, three wonderful sons and an exceptional wardrobe. It seems what the girl wants – the girl gets!
Except for… a cover for Italian Vogue. Not to worry, the waif soccer wife will settle for an Indian one with no hesitation.
Forgive my ignorance, but I never knew such thing existed!
The ex-Spice girl also gave an interview to the magazine, where she announced that she feels like an Indian princess ?!
She also said: “You know, as a designer, I love the detailing in these clothes. It’s so me… this is real craftsmanship.”
…Neither was I aware that she is a “designer” unless having your initials sewn onto jeans’ pockets makes you one.
